Materials science applications for quantum computing on the QuCUN platform - HQS receives an order from BASF

Quantum software company HQS Quantum Simulations has been commissioned by BASF to develop use cases of chemistry and materials simulation on quantum computers for the emerging QuCUN platform. QuCUN is a joint project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, for which the QAR-Lab of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Aqarios, SAP, and BASF have joined forces in a consortium. The project aims to provide an online platform that serves as an ecosystem for developers and users of quantum computing.

Using quantum computers in the future of industry represents an enormous leap forward in innovation for Germany. The establishment of an ecosystem for quantum computing applications will facilitate entry into the new technology.

QuCUN – a user platform for quantum computing

The collaborative project QuCUN is creating an online user platform for quantum computing that will serve as a library and network in the future. It will contain software implementations, cloud interfaces to hardware providers of quantum computers, and analysis tools for various use cases. Access to the innovative platform for companies of all industries and sizes will drive the development of efficient quantum programs and algorithms that reduce user entry barriers.

HQS develops QuCUN use cases for chemical and materials simulation on behalf of BASF.

Especially for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the study of materials at the quantum level is expected to lead to breakthrough developments. HQS Quantum Simulations has been commissioned by BASF, a renowned chemical company and member of the QuCUN consortium, to develop standard use cases for the QuCUN platform library. HQS' software portfolio includes solutions for quantum simulation on NISQ devices. Software applications from HQS are already in use by well-known customers for materials science in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields.

As part of the QuCUN project, HQS will standardize quantum software tools for integration into the QuCUN library and extend them for calculations on different quantum hardware. Providing representative use cases and explanations on the QuCUN platform for the field of quantum-level chemistry and materials simulations will be an asset for research and industry. BASF will already use the platform internally as a user during the project duration.

About HQS Quantum Simulations GmbH

HQS Quantum Simulations GmbH was a spin-off from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2017 to bridge the gap between research and industry in the field of quantum computing. We aim to harness the immense potential of quantum computing to accelerate the development of new materials in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and materials industries. The HQS portfolio is based on the unique approach of simulating open quantum systems and integrating the so-called noise into the algorithm. This allows HQS software to be easily implemented on quantum hardware as soon as it is reliably available to the industry.
Quantum computers offer immense computing power for certain problems, far exceeding that of conventional supercomputers. Therefore, they will fundamentally change the way materials are developed.
